Q & A
Why did you choose your profession?
I wouldn’t say I pursued it, more like the path evolved and I found a way to define it as I saw fit, and ultimately create success with the path I chose.
Who are your greatest influences?
My parents. My dad didn’t have the best childhood but did everything in his power to make sure we did. I get my ambition, drive and work ethic from my dad. My mom didn’t follow the traditional path and neither did I. My mom turned out to be an amazing leader and advocate for her people. She helped me grow my leadership skills.
What tools do you use?
Post-it note stickies, pens, whiteboards, kindness, empathy, and a combined vision. excitement, gratitude, please and thank you, praise, tough love when needed, and making people comfortably uncomfortable.

I’ve used more software tools than you can imagine, but in my experience, if you can’t get there with the basics, it doesn’t matter what tools are used because you won’t get the buy-in. Please and thank you go a long way.
Which recent projects are you proud of?
I’m proud of all of my work for different reasons. The transformational work I did at Moxie, Fridays and Bloomin’ drove significant results for the organizations and most people thought it couldn’t be done. Those are the most satisfying because they create an extra challenge to gain buy-in. The numbers spoke for themselves and demonstrate the power of transformation.
Do you live by any piece of advice or motto?
There are many “Gail-isms” that I use on a regular basis in the workplace.

A VP I once worked for at AOL asked me if I would rather lead the elephant parade or clean up the elephant parade. That phrase has stuck with me and I don’t think it’s that simple. If you’re going to lead the elephant parade, you have responsibility in helping to clean up.
What behavior or personality trait do you most attribute to your success, and why?
Resoluteness = the quality of being strong and determined.

I like challenges. I like to motivate teams around challenges. I like developing people to accomplish what they think can’t be done.
Who inspires you and why?
There are two people. First it was my dad. He had a brain tumor and a stroke before he died. He had to learn to read again as an adult twice, which he did. Once was so he could read his law books to take the California Baby Bar after all this.

The second is my middle child. We adopted him at age 2. He had numerous challenges in his early life. We later found out he had autism. When he was 13 he had a seizure in the pool that impacted his cognitive ability. Despite these things and other, he finished high school in a mainstream class, graduated and now attends college.
